Maths Circles Community Forum

Bob and Ellen Kaplan are working with the Wodonga schools over the next term to help assist teachers and students with developing the understanding and love of mathematics.

This is what Bob and Ellen say about their approach to mathematics.

Mathematics is, like music, one of the great achievements of mankind, yet many people fear or are bored by it. We aim to have everyone understand, enjoy and play it, as they do music, by exploring meaningful problems and inventing their way towards a solution. This approach is called 'Maths Circles'. Instead of telling students facts, we lead them to discover connections themselves, conversationally - and so these discoveries become a part of their way of thinking, rather than forgotten bits of useless formulas.
Each person's competence and confidence increases, along with their pleasure in each other's achievements, as they come to make mathematics their own.

For parents and community members who are interested in finding out more about Maths Circles, Bob and Ellen will run a Community Forum at Wodonga Senior Secondary College - PAK on August 4th from 7-8pm.
