We'd like to take this opportunity to wish all of our members and subscribers a very Merry Christmas!  If you do not celebrate Christmas, or celebrate another festive season, we wish you a merry one of those too!

If you are travelling these holidays, please drive safely and keep a special eye out for those that aren't!  We'd like to remind you all that speeding, driving while talking on your mobile phone and not wearing your seatbelt are all considered "Naughty" and will make sure you end up on the business end of one of Santa's lists!

If you are camping, hiking, boating or one of those other outdoor activities please remember to take all the appropriate safety precautions!  For those of you staying home, please remember that you are staying where most accidents happen!

We hope you all have a wonderful time and make it through to the new year safe and sound!

Melinda Lichnovsky-Klock

Term 1 full day PD.

Hello everyone,

The DEECD's CRT Professional Learning Support Initiative is up for review and we are currently unable to apply for PD in 2013.  Unfortunately this means that a full-day PD in Term 1 is unlikely.

At this time it is our intention to still run this PD, just at a later date to achieve the target 4 x full-day PD workshops/seminars per year.

Our own funds have a healthy balance thanks to the booking fees we charge so we will still be able to provide 2.5 hour evening PD workshops in term 1 2013!

Regards,

Melinda Lichnovsky-Klock

Shepparton CRT Network Coordinator changeover.

Hello everyone!

It feels like the end of an era with Wendy, the Corodinator of the Shepparton CRT Support Network, stepping down yesterday.  I have assumed the role of the Shepparton CRT Network Coordinator as well as remaining the Coordinator for the Wodonga CRT Support Network.  As you may also have noticed from the main blog, I have also started my own YouTube channel.

I just want to assure all of you that despite the extra work involved with these things the Wodonga Network will continue to be run in the same way as it always has been.  There will only be minor changes in anything we do and the chances are that if I don't point them out you'll never even notice!  The only definitive change will be a bit of the juggling of scheduling because I just can't be in 2 places at once!

We will still be holding 4 x full day PDs each year, continue offering 2.5 hour evening PD sessions as the opportunity arises and also continue holding our monthly meetings.

My dedication to all of you remains just as strong as it has always been!

Regards,

Mel.

Sue King Feedback Video and Report.

Apart from a couple of problems with the venue we have been working on fixing for a while now, the workshop finished up with a very positive reaction from those who attended!

Comments in our videos are taken directly from feedback forms left by participants so it's easy to see the kind of response that Sue King is able to generate in a Workshop.  As you can see in the video, Sue King has a knack for making a highly educational day something that's also fun.  The bubble blowing and sign language sections proved particularly enjoyable for the participants!

We had a lot of new faces again this time which was great to see!  We hope you all enjoyed and benefitted from our presenter selection and organization of the day.  We also hope all you travellers, some who travelled a very long way, made it home safely!

Estimated Cost per Head value: $225.00 - $355.00 (based on similar commercial PDs)

Cost per head we paid: $61.78

Cost per head for CRTs?   $10.00

Offering this PD would not have been possible without some help. We'd like to thank:
  • Sue King for her wonderful presentation.
  • The Wodonga South Primary School for the venue.
  • The DEECD for the CRT Professional Learning Support Initiative and the funding it provides
  • VIT for starting and helping to maintain 24 CRT Networks across Victoria.
  • Officeworks Wodonga for their sponsorship of our network
  • and everyone who attended for the wonderful atmosphere they provided!

Please note; For those of you who have requested it, anonymous posting has been enabled!

Free online Professional Development - Rego and PD presentation video..

In August 2012 the Wodonga CRT Support Network was lucky enough to host Dawn Colcott, VIT's Manager of Professional Learning, as a guest speaker in a specially convened meeting.

The topic was Registration and Professional Development dealing with the 2012 changes to the registration process and requirements.
From 2011 onwards, September 30 became a significant date in the teaching profession calendar. The time frame has changed for payment of annual fees and renewal of full registration.
Full registration requires all teachers to maintain their professional practice and suitability to be a teacher through the renewal of registration process.
To be able to teach effectively for student learning, a casual relief teacher should have current professional knowledge and practice.
The Institute recognises that CRTs sometimes have less opportunity to know about and engage in professional development activities.

You can find the rest of this presentation here:

http://wodongacrtsupportnetwork.blogspot.com.au/p/rego-and-pd-video-dawn-colcott.html

This is a full 60 minutes of video!

For those of you still looking for a little guidance:

This will be "teacher identified" PD and no Pdi PASS code is offered.

You can start by referencing this against Standard 7:
Teachers develop organizational and administrative skills to manage their non-teaching duties.
The Wodonga CRT Support Network gratefully acknowledges the assistance of Dawn Colcott and the Victorian Institute of Teaching that made it possible to bring you this online PD opportunity!

Reading Comprehension After PD Report.

The "Reading Comprehension" workshop was successfully run on Thursday 16 August 2012.

The feedback on the workshop from those in attendance were very positive!  Unfortunately we have that bug going around and many were unable to attend due to personal or family illness.  We feel for you all and hope everyone gets well soon!

Estimated Cost per Head value: $85.00 - $125.00 (based on similar commercial PDs)

Cost per head we paid: $49.35

Cost per head for CRTs?   Gold coin Donation!

Offering this PD would not have been possible without some help. We'd like to thank:

  • The Wodonga South Primary School for the venue.
  • The DEECD for the CRT Professional Learning Support Initiative and the funding it provides
  • VIT for starting and helping to maintain 24 CRT Networks across Victoria.
  • and everyone who attended!
We'd also like to take this opportunity as this marks the conclusion of our 3rd evening PD which officially marks the end of our trial run with them.

You have all shown us that the demand is certainly there to encourage us to continue to offer these opportunities.  Even though many were absent for Caryle, it indicates to us that these are also viable to run in areas outside of Wodonga where lower numbers are simply to be expected.

We look forward to bringing good quality PD for CRTs to a wider range of locations across the upper Hume region in the future!  It won't be immediately, there's a lot of organization involved, but this trial has shown us that it is definately worthwhile to devote the required effort to doing so.

Bonus Meeting - Dawn Colcott.

As many will know, Dawn Colcott was unable to attend the Bonus May Meeting we had scheduled.  Since then she has kept us in mind and again has an opportunity to do so.

We will be scheduling a special meeting for Thursday 9 August 2012.

This meeting will be held in an alternate venue due to the non-standard time.  We will be holding this meeting at the Albury Wodonga Community College.

The Meeting will begin at 5.30pm.

We will begin the meeting with an activity that encourages us to think about education as a whole.  The topic will be "What disappoints us most about education".  We encourage you to think a little about this on personal, school-based, regional, state, national and international basis.  We are going to limit you to a certain number of responses on the night so we DO encourage you to prioritize the issues you think modern Teachrs face in the world we live in.

Dawn Colcott from VIT will appear as a guest speaker from 6.30pm to 7.30pm.

This will be followed by discussion of Dawn's presentation (with Q&A time if people would like it), as well as further discussion of the "what disappoints us about education" activity and open member-driven discussion.

As usual, tea, coffee and hot chocolate will be provided as will a light evening tea.

You are welcome to join at 5.30pm to participate in the activity or join us at 6.30pm to attend the guest-speaker segment.

Please email Mel on wodongacrt@vit.vic.edu.au if you intend on attending.

We are happy to announce that the asked for second running of Melinda Lichnovsky-Klock's "Literacy Games" workshop has been arranged.

Her methods center around Student Engagement, making learning fun and using a hands-on approach in order to get students to motivate themselves on the road to Literacy.

The Wodonga CRT Support Network July meeting is scheduled for Wednesday the 25th of July, 4.00pm - 6.30pm.

For July I thought we'd take a look at all of those strategies that we as CRTs use a lot more than full-timers, share our ideas and hopefully create some new ones!
  • Remembering Student's Names.
  • Setting Ground Rules.
  • Immediately effective behaviour management strategies.
  • Ice breaker activities
  • Recognizing who needs more help than who.
and anything else you think fits into this sort of category!

It is open to all network members whether you are a CRT, Beginning and Returning Teacher or on Family Leave.  No booking is required but we would like you to RSVP by Tuesday the 24th so we know how many nibbles and drinks to supply.  Walk-ins without RSVP are welcome, just be aware it means you might have to bring your own snacks!

If you aren't a member but would like to check it all out?  Please feel free to email and make arrangements.  We welcome interested parties whether they be potential members, University Students looking at becoming a CRT or just other teaching professionals curious about what we get up to!

Please keep in mind that ongoing attendance requires membership!  We apologise but we do not accept full time Teachers as members UNLESS they are beginning and returning teachers or on family leave!

You can find full details here;

We cannot supply Pdi PASS codes for meetings.  This meeting is able to be used for PD under the "teacher identified" criteria (2.5 hours) in line with VIT's intentions for VIT CRT Networks.

Melinda Lichnovsky-Klock

Karen Starkiss:
 Creating Dyslexia Friendly Classrooms.

After PD report.

By reading her list of accomplishments it is 100% clear that Karen Starkiss is very knowledgable and has a great deal of experience in dealing with Dyslexia.  It is not until you sit in a room with her that you begin to understand exactly how valuable a presenter she is.  Karen Starkiss has a professional air and the ability to transfer her knowledge to those attending in an engaging and understandable way.  This professional approach is tempered with a wonderous childlike quality with an underlying wisdom that also makes her instantly likeable and trustworthy.  It is rare to come across a presenter able to transfer so much knowledge and wisdom in so little time without much of it being lost due to being assaulted by such a high volume of information.

Few times have we ever recieved such extensive comments in feedback from those attending.  Karen Starkiss has provided participants with a learning experience for that gives us no reason to hesitate in recommending her to any teacher wishing to deepen their knowledge of, and advance their skills and resources in teaching children with, dyslexia.
We had an issue with the heaters in the morning which we apologise for!  Unfortunately there is nothing we can do about it with holiday PD this time of year using our current venue.  Being a school they turn off the climate control during holidays to save money (which leaves more funds for educating students!).

Other than that the PD finished up with a resoundingly positive response from the participants.

We had a lot of new faces this time which was great to see!  We hope you all enjoyed and benefitted from our presenter selection and organization of the day.  We also hope to see you all again!

Estimated Cost per Head value: $225.00 - $355.00 (based on similar commercial PDs)

Cost per head we paid: $86.46

Cost per head for CRTs?   $10.00

Offering this PD would not have been possible without some help. We'd like to thank:
  • Karen Starkiss for her wonderful presentation
  • The Wodonga South Primary School for the venue.
  • The DEECD for the CRT Professional Learning Support Initiative and the funding it provides
  • VIT for starting and helping to maintain 24 CRT Networks across Victoria.
  • Officeworks Wodonga for their sponsorship of our network
  • and everyone who attended for the wonderful atmosphere they provided!

It's time for a reminder!

While this was delt with in the EOFY report;

This blog deals only with the workshops that we offer.  If all you are interested in is the workshops then this is the place for you!

We do, however, offer other opportunities for local CRTs which are delt with on our other blog.

Meetings;

While we do occasionally deal with network issues, these meetings are primarily about you.  They are intended to facilitate the building of relationships, the sharing of resources, the discussion of the application of up-to- date teaching practice and as a place to find strategies to deal with the particular areas you might be having issues with.

You can find the schedule for our meetings here;

There is also a page on our Main blog which is dedicated to the next meeting on the schedule, outlining the opening topics.  Once a meeting has been run we take down it's page and put one up for the next meeting.

If you would like to know how Meetings fit in with the PD requirements for your registration you can find out a little more here;

The Main Blog.

If you follow either of the above links you will see we run two blogs.  Our Main blog provides commentary on education-related issues as well as links to other VIT CRT Network blogs, Teacher blogs and other places where you can access professional readings and other Professional Development related information.

The idea of our Main blog is to provide a launching off point for your own online search for Professional Development opportunities.

If you have found our workshops engaging and enjoyable we encourage you to give our other activities a try too.

Koncept Mastery's e5 Workshop with Kate and Mel.

The e5 Workshop with Koncept Mastery (Kate and Mel) was successfully run on Saturday 12 May 2012.

The Feedback on the workshop, from both those in attendance and the presenters, were very positive.  Thank you to everyone involved, those of you attending included, for the relaxed and friendly atmosphere of the workshop!

Estimated Cost per Head value: $155.00 - $225.00 (based on similar commercial PDs)

Cost per head we paid: $131.00

Cost per head for CRTs? $10.00

This is our most expensive PD on a cost per head basis but we knew this would be the case up front.  e5 is a bit of an unknown quantity amongst CRTs in our region so we knew it wouldn't attract the numbers of some of our previous PDs.  However we at the Wodonga CRT Support Network believe wholeheartedly in the methods and concepts behind the e5 Instructional Model.

It is our hope that running this PD will generate some word of mouth and raise local awareness of the benefits of the e5 Instructional Model.  Thank you Mel and Kate of Koncept Mastery for helping us to achieve this goal.

Offering this PD would not have been possible without some help. We'd like to thank:
  • Kate and Mel from Koncept Mastery
  • The Wodonga South Primary School for the venue.
  • The DEECD for the CRT Professional Learning Support Initiative and the funding it provides
  • Henri's Bakery and my husband Paul for the catering
  • and everyone who attended!

More PD Opportunities on the way.

In Term 3 we have chosen to focus on students with Learning Difficulties and we have just received Approval for 2 more full-day Professional development Workshops.

Sue King - Austism Spectrum Disorder.

September sees the one we know many of you are waiting for, the return of Sue King.

Sue will be bringing us another round of insights into the Autism Spectrum Disorder and this year will focus on Classroom Visual Resources;
  • Overview of the Positive Partnerships, giving the foundations of Autism
  • The difference between Visuals for Learning and Visuals for Behaviour Management and Self Regulation
  • Visuals for high and low functioning students.
Some of the same ground will be covered this year as last but there will be plenty of new content on offer!

 Karen Starkiss - Dyslexia.

A newcomer to our Network presenters is Karen Starkiss.
Karen has over 20 years primary classroom teaching experience. In England she was the Principal of one of the top performing primary schools and employed to work in “failing” schools to improve standards of teaching and learning. An earlier management role was Special Needs Consultant, she also lectured nationally about integrating children with dyslexia into mainstream classrooms. Since she has been in Australia Karen is a consultant with her own business – Dyslexia Support Services; she has continued to assess and advise a number of adults and children with dyslexia and has run courses throughout Melbourne for teachers and classroom assistants. She was recently described by The Age newspaper as a "Dyslexia Crusader."
Reports from other Networks is that she is a knowledgable, no-nonsense and very enjoyable presenter.

Karen will also see something some of you have been asking to have happen for a while now, Workshops during the holidays.  This is a trial run to be held in the Term 2 holidays but we hope attendance will be at levels which we can afford to keep providing holiday PD as long as the demand is there.

Pages for these presenters will go up a week before bookings open for the PD so keep an eye on the blog!

Mel.

e5 Bookings Open.

**Please note that bookings for this workshop have closed.  You may still ask to be put on a waiting list to be offered places should someone be unable to attend.**

Please be aware that we will NOT be reserving seats for non-travellers until they have paid their booking fee.  These PDs take money to run and the booking fees are essential to their running successfully.  While the DEECD fund the PD it is on a reimbursement / pay on invoice system.  The advance money from booking payments is required to maintain our current PD quality!

As usual, travellers who live to far away for it to be practical to pay the booking fee at the Wodonga South Primary School will be able to pay on the day.

Up until now this has been coming primarily from my pocket and I regret that I simply can't keep doing it that way.  I apologise but there is no way around this reality.  Thankyou for your understanding!

What is e5?

There seems to be a little confusion on what e5 actually is and why you need to know!

The publication of the e5 Instructional Model is an important and exciting achievement for government education in Victoria. The e5 Instructional Model signals that, as a system, we have recognised the need to reach agreement about what constitutes high quality instruction so that we can describe what effective teachers do in the classroom to engage students in intellectually demanding work.
The publication of the model also acknowledges the work of Professor Patrick Griffin from The University of Melbourne. Patrick provided the methodology for the project as well as the assessment and measurement expertise necessary to construct the e5 Instructional Model. Patrick continues to assist us to understand the nature of expertise and what it means to improve in a domain of learning. This publication draws on his writing and conceptual framework to explain the process undertaken to construct the model.

The international evidence base has reached consensus about the significant influence teachers have in the classroom and the knowledge and skill base required to teach all students well. In order to improve teacher practice, teachers must not only understand what it looks like to improve in different domains of learning, but they must also believe they are capable of improving their practice. And they must be effectively supported within their schools where the work of teaching and learning resides.

The e5 Instructional Model is not a recipe for teacher practice but rather a framework to inform conversations and guide the observation, critique and reflection of classroom practice. There are many different ways that teachers can vary in their approach and their behaviour and still be highly effective in the classroom. All teachers use their professional judgement to adapt their practice to the specific context they work in and to the particular cohort of students they teach. However, within this zone of discretion there are common practices that draw on a professional knowledge base in the classroom we can develop a great understanding of the nature of the professional learning teachers require to improve their practice.
Every educator is invited to engage with the e5 Instructional Model as a framework for defining what high quality instruction looks like in the Victorian government education system. Together we can create the most innovative and the highest performing education system in the world.

This is not a small deal in Victorian schools and something every Victorian teacher needs to have a grounding in.

From our past PD workshops provided we would hope that you can understand that our criteriaplaces an emphasis on relevance to our members and other local CRTs.  We do not select presenters lightly and have a drive to provide what you need to survive in classrooms, with an emphasis on Victorian classrooms in particular when necessary.  This PD is no different.

If you have only the barest idea, or no idea, of what e5 is, we urge you to visit the DEECD website here;

http://www.education.vic.gov.au/proflearning/e5/default.htm

While this gives you the basics, the Workshop will give you the e5 handbook and a deeper understanding with which to carry it into the classroom to improve your effectiveness as a teacher.

Regards,

Mel.

Hands on Maths report.

Michael Ymer's Hands on Maths has been run successfully.

We are sorry to those of you who had to miss out because of the floods!  You just can't beat mother nature how ever hard you try.

There were a few small glitches but mostly everything went off without a hitch.  The Feedback on the workshop, from both those in attendance and the presenter, was unanimously positive.  Thank you to everyone involved, those of you attending included, for the wonderful atmosphere of the workshop!

Estimated Cost per Head value: $135.00 - $155.00 (based on similar commercial PDs)

Cost per head we paid: $92 (this would have been $81 if we had not lost some to the floods!)

Cost per head for CRTs? $10.00

This included Michael as a Presenter, his travel and accommodation costs, the venue, catered morning tea/lunch and resources!

Achieving this low cost would not have been possible without some help. We'd like to thank:

Michael Ymer for his brilliant workshop.
Jacqui for her generous help on the day.
The Wodonga South Primary School for the venue.
The DEECD for the CRT Professional Learning Support Initiative and the funding it provides
Henri's Bakery and my husband Paul for the catering
and everyone who attended!

To address 2 issues;

Lunch room urn;

We apologise for the urn in the lunch room not being turned on.  It is the first time it has been off since we started using the venue so we were lax and did not double-check.  Rest assured we will triple-check in the future!

Signage for directions to the room from car parks;

We understand that this is an issue!  We had paper signs ready for the day but the rain just foiled all our efforts.  Plans are in the works for more permenant signs but unfortunately it all takes money.  While the DEECD funds most of the aspects of PD workshops for CRT's, there is no allowance for some types of items like signs.  This is where the booking fee comes in.  We use the money from the booking fees to provide extras like the goodie bags, fund further PD and buy items like signs, serving trays, an urn for tea'coffee etc.

Unfortunately we have to prioritize.  Signs ARE coming though, rest assured.  We apologise in the mean time and ask that you bear with us!

Regards,

Mel.

Michael Ymer and the flooding!

Hello again!

We are aware that the unseasonal weather is causing flooding issues that may prevent some from attending Michael Ymer's "Hands on Maths" Workshop tomorrow.

We are keeping places open and have catered for all who have booked.  We have done this so that you do not have to make a decision on whether or not to come until you can see the flood reports in the morning!  Likewise, late arrivals will be accepted in anticipation of any detours you may have to make. We don't want anyone missing out unless it's absolutely necessary.

At this time one northbound lane of the Hume Freeway is closed and speed limits are reduced to 40km/h but it is passable.

You can check road closures and changed traffic conditions here:

Drive safely everyone!

Regards,

Melinda Lichnovsky-Klock

Hands on Maths!

A mathematics PD with presenter Michael Ymer.

March 3rd, 2012

Michael Ymer is an experienced mathematics teacher/consultant who has been involved in numerous Victorian state initiatives in mathematics. He is currently working with individual schools and clusters of teachers from Primary and Secondary schools throughout the state as a consultant in a wide range of Professional Development programs in mathematics.
Michael is an enthusiastic and entertaining presenter who has a clear and practical approach to the challenges that confront schools in mathematics. He brings to his presentations an understanding of what does and doesn't work in our classrooms.

This will be a Workshop style PD with hands-on learning and activities. It is Pdi approved and will be 6.5 "Verified PD Hours" for VIT requirements to maintain your registration.

If you attended last year, we can happily announce that Michael has varied the content from May 2011's PD.  It will be worth while attending even if you were at the last one while at the same time being perfectly suitable for those who have never attended one of Michael's PD's before!  We thank Michael for his flexability and willingness to help us squeeze every ounce of benefit out of his workshop for as many CRTs as possible!

Status: Closed.

Please search "Wodonga Ymer" to find this listing on Pdi.

Network membership, to either the Wodonga CRT Support Network or another VIT sponsored CRT network, is not a requirement to attend this PD.

Seats are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis and reserved only upon payment of the booking fee. Exceptions made only for distance travellers or where a school is paying the fee.

There are a total of 60 available places.  We are currently limiting the number of seats available to non-CRTs to 10. This number will be relaxed if the workshop is not booked out leading up to the Workshop.

If booked out (or the maximum non-CRT seats are filled) you may ask to be put on a waiting list. Cancelled bookings will be filled from this list before publicly reopening seats. Please email wodongacrt@vit.vic.edu.au to be placed on the waiting list.  Should seats become available you will then receive an email offering a place.

Venue: Wodonga South Primary School, Cartwright St Wodonga.

Parking:  Free all-day parking will be available in the Kelliher Ave or Cartwright St Teacher's car parks.  Please do NOT use the short-term or bus parking on Kelliher Ave for all day parking.

Time: Sign-in begins at 8.45 am, PD time 9.00am to 3.30pm.

Cost: $10.00 booking fee for Victorian registered CRTs, $30 booking fee for other teaching professionals. This is a non refundable fee and payable upon booking.

For the first time we are opening bookings to NSW CRT's from Albury and surrounding areas.  You must be presently working as a CRT in Albury and surrounding areas and not have a permanent part time position.  We regret that we CANNOT accept NSW teachers with a permanent position.  Please be aware that this is a trial and only limited numbers will be accepted.  Your booking fee will be the $30 for "other teaching professionals" which covers your catering and resources.  All NSW CRT's MUST apply for a seat by emailing wodongacrt@vit.vic.edu.au.  You will be accepted on a case by case basis with preference going to those with a genuine interest in becoming Victorian registered teachers.

There is no further cost for this PD, all you will pay is the booking fee.  It is funded by the DEECD's Casual Relief Teachers Professional Learning Support Initiative and Wodonga CRT Support Network funds.

Estimated Value: $105.00 - $158.00 per head (based on similar PD opportunities offered by training organizations).
